What is Operation Lifesaver?

Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit, international continuing public education program designed to end collisions, deaths and injuries at places where roadways cross train tracks, and on railroad rights-of-way.

To meet its lifesaving goals, Operation Lifesaver programs promote public awareness of the highway-rail crossing environment and encourage compliance with traffic laws relating to crossing signs and signals, as well as the private property laws related to rail trespassing.

To accomplish these goals Operation Lifesaver has trained and certified volunteer speakers that provide FREE safety presentations for various professions and for all age groups in order to increase public safety awareness around railroad tracks.

The Mission of Operation Lifesaver is to Promote the 3 “E’s”

Educate

Increase public awareness about the dangers around the rails.

Enforcement

Promote active enforcement of traffic laws and trespassing.

Engineering

Encourage continued engineering research to improve the safety of railroad crossings.
